Sarah Jameson

Sarah is a Sydney-based cellist and teacher who studied with Dorothy Sumner and Georg Pedersen. She is passionate about developing school string programs and she conducts string orchestras at various schools, while also teaching cello privately. In addition, she examines for the AMEB.

Sarah enjoys composing and arranging for string instruments and string orchestras. This collection of pieces is designed to allow students to explore different genres and string techniques, and to encourage personal style and musical decisions from the earliest stages of playing.

Champion Cellists

A collection of original compositions for cello and piano and cello alone. These pieces explore different styles and allow students to be creative in their interpretation. They can be used for concert performance, to supplement grade exam programs and to provide a little breathing space in lessons or between goals. The pieces are fun to play and fun to listen to.

Thumb position… cello students can’t wait to get up there, but finding pieces that encourage them to develop a well-shaped hand position and are enjoyable to practice is not an easy task.

Thumbs Up! is a collection of new arrangements which work on playing in thumb position. Familiar melodies and folk songs are used to capture students’ attention and provide a strong musical reward.

This volume can be used progressively, over a few months, or dipped into as needed to support other repertoire. Detailed fingering suggestions are included to help students gain confidence in finger relationships.

There are lots of duets for students to play with their teacher, or with other students (you can experiment with swapping parts so that both players have a chance to show off their thumb position).

Every musician has something to say, a musical idea they want to convey or a feeling they want to express.

Playing with personality can, and should be a focus from the beginning. It isn’t magical - it’s giving students the technical tools they need and introducing them to sound and tone colour - getting them out of the notes on the page and into the sound world.

This is how the music can be alive and unique for each player.
